UNION SQUARE. The creative husband-wife team of Marco Moreira and Jo-Ann Makovitzky once thrilled NYC palates while running the Marco Polo Cafe. These days, it's their Tocqueville that's turning heads. The kitchen, led by Chef Moreira, continually pushes the envelope with brilliant mains like wild salmon wrapped in Savoy cabbage, Nantucket cod and Manilla clams with summer squash, and the sinfully seared, dry-aged "sixty-second" sirloin. The scene, meanwhile, is one of sophisticated simplicity – walls painted in a mellow, buttery hue, subtle lighting and white linens. TRAIN: N, R, L, 4, 5, 6 to 14th St-Union Sq

FLATIRON DISTRICT. Craft stands apart from other Big Apple eateries, thanks in large part to its classic – if old-fashioned – approach to fine dining. Indeed, acclaimed chef Tom Colicchio impresses discerning Big Apple diners with his innovative approach, eschewing traditional menus and allowing them to design their own meals centered around market fresh fish, seafood, and meat, and poultry. Entrees of lamb roasted in olive oil, arugula and salmon, or seared Chilean sea bass are accompanied by innovative vegetable sides - savvier choices include their near-legendary mushroom bouquets. FLATIRON DISTRICT. This Art Deco-style restaurant, the latest brainstorm of noted New York restaurateur Danny Meyer, may not be as flashy or chic as its brethren, but it is nevertheless a good place to enjoy an excellent meal with a splash of New York style. The delicious brunch menu offered by Chef Kerry Heffernan features the likes of Black Angus tenderloin poêlé, slow-cooked Scottish salmon with fennel-saffron consommé, and pecan-praline pancakes. FLATIRON DISTRICT. As the waters of the North Atlantic crash onto the shores of Brittany, the salt residue leaves tiny, flower-shaped formations behind. These flowers of salt are "harvested" and used to flavor food. From such tradition, the Flatiron's rustic Fleur de Sel draws inspiration. It regales patrons not only with its sophisticated approach to the "dining out process," but also with more subtle nuances like the amiable service and outstanding wine list. Owner-chef Cyril Renaud, all the while, brings out the best of his native Brittany with dishes like halibut with glazed endive, sea scallops with artichoke purée, and venison loin with potato gratin. Chef's tasting menu: $112; 3-course prix fix: $72. TRAIN: 6, N, R to 23rd St

FLATIRON DISTRICT. Fashionably dressed with stark white walls, stained hardwoods, earthen accents and pendant lighting, this high-end Indian restaurant appeals to a cross section of neighborhood folks and hip, young professionals. The kitchen looks to the regions of Punjab, Hyderabad, Goa, Madras, Lucknow and Calcutta for inspiration. The result is an exceptional array of dishes that incorporate everything from gosht (lamb and goat) to samundri moti (fish and seafood). NB If you're looking for a different type of late afternoon nip, the neighboring tea room features Indian specialties like ajwain biscuits as well as sandwiches, pastries, and several varieties of hot tea. FLATIRON DISTRICT. The Flatiron District enjoys its fair share of chic restaurants, and among them is this high-end Indian place, whose decor and cuisine capture the more evocative nature of the Sub Continent: lanterns, brightly colored textiles, imported marble, and carved wood accents. Several regions of India are represented on the menu, and signature dishes include tandoor-grilled Jamison Farm lamb, yam dumplings with tomato gravy, and turkey Kaa Keema. For the truly adventurous, the list of specialty cocktails includes the Soursop Martini and spicy Mumbai Margarita. Tasting menu: $65. TRAIN: N ,R,Q,W,4,5,6,L to Union Sq

FLATIRON DISTRICT. The interior of this highly-recommended restaurant was designed by the AvroKO group. They created a sleek, sexy space by incorporating both Asian and elemental aesthetics, and their efforts have met with rave reviews. The Sapa experience isn't focused only on style, though. The food, which blends ingredients of France and Vietnam, is nothing short of extraordinary. Mains run from soy ginger-steamed fish to horseradish-crusted salmon. To the delight of the regulars, the kitchen also prepares a bundle of superb seasonal dishes like cocoa and peanut-glazed spare-ribs. TRAIN: F, N, R, V, W to 23rd St
